AAUW marks 125th year Friday, November 24, 2006 MONMOUTH - The American Association of University Women, a national organization of 100,000 members that promotes equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change, is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2006. Through its network, AAUW opens doors for women and girls and influences public debate on critical social issues such as education, civil rights, and workplace equity. The AAUW Educational Foundation provides funding to advance education, research and self-development for women.The Monmouth Branch of AAUW, founded in November 1924, is proud to celebrate its 82nd anniversary this year. The branch has been active in its support of programs in the community including the AAUW Art Presenter Program which now serves 67 classrooms in the United District, District 238 Monmouth-Roseville, and the Immaculate Conception School. In its 34th year, the volunteer art program seeks to broaden students' visual literacy and increase their awareness of the role of art in life. Other projects include the annual Women's History Month Essay Contest for sixth-grade students in Warren County schools and presentations to teachers in local schools to promote awareness of the issue of bullying. As a sponsor of candidates' forums during election campaigns, the branch has been an advocate for voter education. The Monmouth Branch is one of 1,300 branches nationwide and includes members from Macomb, Galesburg, Oneida and Wataga as well as from Monmouth. The officers are: Marilyn VanAusdall and Lila Blum, co-presidents; Nancy Buban, program vice president; Kathy Lowe-Arthur, membership vice president; Joyce Hagemann, secretary; Shirley Dadonna, treasurer; Ronda Willhardt, president-elect. Membership is open to women who hold an associate's or equivalent, baccalaureate, or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
