Students should be proud of stand

Editor, Register-Mail: I was appalled and angry at the Westboro Baptist Church for their hateful and intolerant filth that they spewed upon our community earlier this week. After visiting their Web site to send a protest letter of my own, I was further sickened by their twisted views.

These people continue to show impertinence to families and friends of fallen soldiers across this country every day. It is ironic that they shout "God hates America" and "Veterans have no honor" as Mr. Wehrly, and thousands more veterans like him, has paid the ultimate price so this group can spread their "views" whenever and however they choose. It is, regrettably in this instance, one of the things that makes this the greatest country on Earth. Unfortunately they continue to disrespect those individuals who fight for those freedoms we all enjoy.

As far as the Wesboro Baptist Church and others like them, offer them one thing that they cannot live with. Silence. This does not allow them to spread their message of hate. They found this out as the Knox College students failed to respond to their repeated slurs. That was not the outcome that the Westboro Church had originally desired.

I would also like to say thank you to the Knox College students who risked their own safety to show the proper respect to a mournful group of family and friends of Mr. Wehrly. You should be proud of yourselves. - Ty Trotter, Williamsfield
