Greatest living music legends Rating Game Thursday, September 27, 2007
DAVE WYNES 1. Paul McCartney: I truly didn't want to put Sir Paul, but it's hard to deny what he has done in music. He is a true king of pop. 2. Eric Clapton: The one thing about Clapton is that he has never gone away. No matter what decade we talk about he has done something special. Whether it's his work with the Yardbirds or the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith or his solo work, he always seems to reinvent himself, yet still remain the same. 3. Tony Iommi: The founding member of Black Sabbath and the only member to have been in the band during it's entire thirty plus years together. This jazz and blues guitar player changed his playing style when he began using dropped tunings and minor keys. The changes he made set the blue print for what would become known as heavy metal.
JOANNE SANDY 1. Chuck Berry: This living music legend can "play a guitar just like ringing a bell" and is the reason why "it's gotta be rock and roll music if you want to dance with me." 2. Eric Clapton: This three-time inductee into the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame has a "Slowhand" that is rooted in the blues and continues to be a music innovator. 3. Bob Dylan: While writing songs like "The Times, They are a-Changin," Dylan is a living music legend whose lyrics have become anthems for American unrest.
PAUL SCHUYTEMA 1. B.B. King: The fact that B.B. can't sing and play guitar at the same time hasn't slowed him down one bit. The octogenarian has produced hundreds of albums of classic blues and has performed for kings, queens and presidents. 2. Bob Dylan: Elvis Costello once said that hearing Dylan perform is on the magnitude of hearing Homer read the Odyssey live. Dylan has been a master storyteller-through-song since the mid 1960s and has influenced nearly every significant popular musical artist of the last forty years. 3. Honeyboy Edwards: Honeyboy is the last living connection between today and the deep Delta blues of the late 1920s and 1930s. He was a friend of Robert Johnson and toured the Delta during the 30s, and was there during the fateful day when Johnson was poisoned.
GARY JOHNSON 1. Bob Dylan: Dylan's music started as folk and then he plugged-in to rock. The tunes then went from spiritual to country. The evolution of the Dylan sound will forever keep him a legend. 2. Rolling Stones: Mick, Keith and the other Stones "Can't Get No Satisfaction." But they can be true British rock legends in America. 3. ZZ Top: Billy, Dusty and Frank will keep this little band from Texas in "Cheap Sunglasses" and always a legend of rock.
JOHN PULLIAM 1. Paul McCartney: Great songwriter/singer who, along with John Lennon, is responsible for revolutionary changes in rock music. 2. Kanye West: Is it too early to label Kanye a legend? Responsible for a more tuneful form of rap and, along with Common, helped establish the Chicago rap sound. 3. Jason Ringenberg: The Sheffield, Ill., native and frontman for Jason and The Scorchers, wrote the book on Alt Country in the '80s. Still involved in solo projects. Ask around Nashville, Jason almost single-handedly created this country-blues-rock genre.
