Boynton, Blake lead by five

Only team under 70 in second round

Sunday, September 18, 2005

GALESBURG - For Pete Boynton and Pat Blake, the mission continues.

The pair - trying to win their sixth Galesburg All-City Best Ball golf tournament - continued their assault on the 2005 title Saturday at Soangetaha Country Club, firing a 69 to take a five-shot lead heading into the final round today at Lake Bracken Country Club.

The duo's total of 133 after 36 holes leads Bob and Gerry Dennis at 138, with the teams of John Herman-Jeff Bivens and Jeff Jones-Dan Perez one shot farther back.

"We could have played better today - I left Pete kind of by himself on the back nine today - but we're pretty happy with our position going into the final round," Blake said. "We got off to a pretty good start - we both had birdie putts on the first hole and Pete made birdie on No. 2 - and we were off and running. But on the back side we left some birdies out there."

Boynton and Blake - five-time previous winners of the tournament - were the only team to shoot a sub-70 round on Saturday, and many players attributed that to the speed of the greens at Soangetaha after the club recently acquired a new greens roller.

"The greens were quite a bit faster today than they have been in the past - they've been quicker anyhow over the last three weeks - but today they were definitely fast," Boynton said.

Kirk Hosteng, the head pro at Soangetaha, estimated the greens to be "about a foot and a half faster" than they have been.

Three teams shot 71 Saturday - the Dennis pair, Jeff Jones and Dan Perez, and Mike and Bob Tapper.

Roger Cirimotich watches his ball after putting on No. 3 at Soangetaha Country Club Saturday morning in the first round of the All-City Best Ball Tournement.

"It's going to be pretty tough to catch those guys," Gerry Dennis said. "Lake Bracken is Pat's home course and Pete is certainly very familiar with it, so they're likely to put up a good score tomorrow. But we'll go out and try to do our best."

Boynton - who could capture his 13th personal Best Ball title with a win -said they don't have the title wrapped up yet.

"There are a lot of birdies available out there," he said. "We're just going to go out and try to hit fairways and greens and see what happened."

Mike Tapper laughed when told of Boynton's remarks.

"Pete's right, there are a lot of birdies out there to be made," he said. "The problem is that those two will probably make most of them."

Other teams still within seven shots included the pairs of Cory Scott and George Burgland, Mack and Preston Foster, and Randy Conlon and John Kessler at 140. The Tapper-Tapper pairing is another shot back at 141.

Tee times for the final round begin at noon, with the final group slated to start at 1:36 p.m.
