Manfred Url spent time in Galesburg a couple years ago and the Austrian artist now is coming back to town for the opening reception of an exhibition of his paintings at the Galesburg Civic Art Center.

"All the work is inspired by his time in Galesburg and Chicago, when he was here in 2005," said Heather Norman, director of the Galesburg Civic Arts Center.

Url's large, abstract paintings will be on display through Sept. 29 at the Galesburg Civic Art Center, 114 E. Main St., along with metal work by Matt Myers of Macomb.

A free opening reception for both artists is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Norman said Url plans to make a painting during the reception while his wife performs music. He has been a professional artist for 15 years and has in worked in watercolors, oils, acrylics and mixed media.

Myers is a full-time blacksmith/metalsmith whose work ranges from wedding rings to looming metal sculptures. He has shown his work across the country and received many awards from juried art exhibits.

Large abstract paintings by Url, such as this 60x90 piece entitled "Flame of my Heart," will be on display through Sept. 29 at the Galesburg Civic Art Center, along with sculptures by Matt Myers of Macomb.

The reception and exhibition mark the beginning of a busy month for the Galesburg Civic Art Center, with Art in the Park and a film festival both scheduled for September.

Llamas take center stage at Wildlife park

Wildlife Prairie State Park near Kickapoo has some special events planned for the three-day weekend.

The park will host a cookout and corn roast Saturday from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. On Sunday, the Illinois Llama Association will present Llamas on the Prairie, a full-day event featuring spinning wheel demonstrations and informative displays on llama products in addition to showcasing the animals themselves. The entire 2,000-acre zoological park that's home to animals native to Illinois - from bison to cougars - will be open all weekend, too.

Labor Day Parade highlights holiday's importance

While a lot of people merely think of Labor Day as a three-day weekend perfect for saying goodbye to summer, Galesburg's annual Labor Day parade - now in its 115th year - is a great reminder of the holiday's significance.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday in downtown Galesburg, starting at Main and Chambers street and ending at the Knox County Courthouse.

Local labor leaders usually serve as grand marshal for the parade. This year, U.S. Congressman Phil Hare, D-Rock Island, is in that role. Hare, a Galesburg native, worked for many years at the Seaford Clothing Factory in Rock Island and was a union leader, serving as president of UNITE HERE Local 617. He now serves on the House's Labor Committee.

Stearman Fly-In educates and entertains

Every year, the sight of Stearman planes flying overhead at the Labor Day Parade signals the beginning of the annual National Stearman Fly-In, which starts Monday and runs through Sept. 9.

The event draws enthusiasts of the World War II era biplanes from all over the country for seminars and competitions, from flour bombing to aerobatic flying. Narrated tram rides, live music and educational programs are scheduled throughout the week at the Galesburg Municipal Airport.

Last chance for Lake Storey Beach, public pool

This weekend is the last hurrah for fun in the sun at Lake Storey Beach and Lakeside Water Park Splash Zone. Both facilities will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday before shutting down for the season.

"I would imagine we're going to be pretty busy," said Debbie Keever of the city's recreation division. "It's kind of the last day of sun and freedom and I think even the kids feel that. Then they start counting down to next summer."
