Woodhull prepares for party
Town's 150th anniversary features several events

WOODHULL - The sesquicentennial committee is finalizing plans for the July 18-22 celebration for Woodhull's 150th anniversary."We have just 44 days left," Chairman Rabecka Jones told a group of residents and volunteers meeting Wednesday. Committee meetings will be held at 7 p.m. each Wednesday at the municipal building. Residents are urged to attend and be involved in the celebration.
Plans were finalized for the opening ceremony July 18 at the high school, with a birthday cake and refreshments.
This will be followed by the Queen pageant and applications for entries for the queen contest are available at the Farmers State Bank offices in Alpha and Woodhull. The bank is the sponsor for this event. Area girls ages 16-19 may enter the event.
Applications also are available at Farmers State Bank for the princess contest for girls 13-15 years old, and applications for parade entries also are available at the bank offices.
Television and radio stations have been contacted and though some confirmations have not been received, there will be some coverage of events, including the parade on July 21.
Larry Hanson and Terry Bumphrey are in charge of the parade and said nearly 50 entries have been received.
The parade route and the route for the 5K fun run and walk were discussed and local police and Henry County Auxiliary Police will be available to help with these events.
July 19 is a meal served by the FFA and FFA Alumni, with the Little Princess contest at 6 p.m. and local teen bands performing from 8-11 p.m.
Friday's events include the cemetery walk, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with United Church as the meeting place; lunch will be served at the church.
A final meeting for this committee and the participants will be late in June.
Bus tours to the Howard Ringberg historic barn will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and again on Saturday. Those tours will begin at the new municipal building, with transportation available to this site east of Woodhull.
Friday and Saturday an antique quilt show will be at the library community room, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Edwards Rover Antique tractor exhibit is both Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday, activities include food vendors, air amusements, pony rides, a talent show and dinner in the park by the Woodhull/Clover Fire Department.
That evening, 7:30 to midnight, the Battle of the Bands event is on North Division Street, and Disney movies and child care will be at the school, from 8 to midnight. This event will be supervised by parents and older students of Flip Side Tumbling in Woodhull.
Saturday, in addition to the fun run and walk beginning at 8 a.m. at the high school, the parade is scheduled for 11 a.m. with lineup beginning at 8 a.m. at the Woodhull Co-Op site on the west edge of town.
Other activities Saturday include the cutest baby contest, homemade pie contest, dinner at the park by the firefighters and Modern Cowboys live band performance at 7 p.m.
Sunday is the final day of the celebration, with a breakfast at Faith Christian Church beginning at 7 a.m., a community church service at the park at 9:30 a.m., with all five area church pastors participating, followed by the Ol' Tyme Bluegrass Gospel group performing at 10:30 a.m.
A community church picnic, sponsored by women of the area churches, is at noon. The Orion Community band will entertain during an ice cream social at 1 p.m.
The closing ceremony is at 3 p.m.
Souvenirs will be available each day at the park, to include crocks and pitchers, T-shirts, sweatshirts, stadium blankets, pins and other items, with the sesquicentennial logo.
