GALESBURG - Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced late Friday the city of Galesburg will receive a $1.3 million grant for the Broad Street brick restoration project.Alderman Wayne Allen, Ward 6, said the grant was applied for the portion of North Broad Street from Losey to Fremont streets.
"I'm surprised the grant is available," Allen said.
According to a press release from the state, the project will restore the "historical integrity of the street and improve the overall quality of this portion of the National Register Historic District."
"We are very pleased that the governor has decided to release this grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program to the city of Galesburg," said state Rep. Don Moffitt, R-Gilson, in the prepared release. "These funds will help to improve the business climate of the area and aid economic development for new and retained businesses."
The Galesburg grant is part of the latest round of ITEP grants, including more than 100 projects totalling $60 million. The grants are designed to improve the quality of life in the state by promoting alternative transportation, such as bike/hike trails, and preserving transportation-related resources.
Allen said the project wasn't in the city's street plan "because it was contingent upon receiving the grant."
Local matching funds from the brick street fund are required, although the state did not specify how much money the city will have to contribute. To qualify for the money, work must begin within one year.
