Memorial Day Services

ABINGDON - American Legion Post 381 will conduct services at the following locations Monday.

- 9:30 a.m.: Cherry Grove Cemetery

- 9:45 a.m.: Meridian Cemetery

- 10:15 a.m.: Hunt Cemetery

- 10:30 a.m.: St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery

- 10:45 a.m.: Babbitt Cemetery

- 1 p.m.: Abingdon Cemetery.

The annual Memorial Day Parade will start on Main Street in Avon at 11 a.m. and proceed to the Avon Cemetery, where memorial services will be held upon arrival. The Rev. Melody Andrews of Berwick Baptist Church will deliver the eulogy and the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will participate in the services.

Alexis - James Harvey Scott American Legion Post 189 will conduct services at 10 a.m. Monday in Mount Vernon Cemetery, North Henderson, and at 11 a.m. in Alexis Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Lee of Moline will deliver the address. In case of inclement weather, a joint service will be in the United School District fieldhouse.

The Avenue of Flags will be displayed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Memorial Day in Alexis Cemetery, weather permitting. Volunteers are needed to help set up and dismantle the display.

CAMERON - Silent Home Cemetery Association will conduct services at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery two miles south of Cameron. A Salute to the Dead by the Honor Guard will be held at the cemetery rain or shine; services will be in Cameron Christian Church if there is rain. Chief Judge Ronald Tenold of the Ninth Judicial Circuit will speak at the event and flags will be placed on the graves of military veterans. Roll call will be read.

GALVA - Maj. Mike Kessel, commander of the Galva National Guard unit, which returned in March after a year in Iraq, will be the featured speaker for Memorial Day services in Galva Cemetery.

The ceremony will begin 10 a.m. The Avenue of Flags - large U.S. flags lining routes in the cemetery - will greet attendees.

Kessel of Mahomet will speak from the veterans walkway, which opened in the east end of the cemetery on Memorial Day weekend 2003.

The Galva Fusiliers will perform. The Fusiliers also will perform at area cemeteries at the following times Monday:

- 9 a.m.: Bishop Hill

- 10:45 a.m.: St. John's Catholic Cemetery

- 11: 15 a.m.: LaFayette

Volunteers are needed to help erect the Avenue of Flags. To help, meet at the water works building next to the police station at 6 a.m. Memorial Day.

MONMOUTH - The Monmouth Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will have a service at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the American Legion. The Monmouth Municipal Band will play from 9:30 to 10 a.m. followed by the speaker, Lt. Col. Charles Thie, a former Burlington, Iowa, dentist. Thie was commissioned in the Air Force after college and then left to be in private practice in Burlington. After 9/11, Thie re-enlisted and is stationed at Scott Air Force Base.

The Monmouth VFW and American Legion will conduct memorial services at the following locations Sunday.

- 11 a.m.: Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery

- 11:15 a.m.: Monmouth Cemetery, new section

- 11:20 a.m.: Monmouth Cemetery, old section

- 11:30 a.m.: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Monmouth

- 11:45 a.m.: Memorial service on the lawn at the Warren County Courthouse

- 12:15 p.m.: Cameron Cemetery

- 12:45 p.m.: Berwick Cemetery

- 1 p.m.: Lenox Cemetery

- 1:45 p.m.: Ellison Cemetery

- 2:15 p.m.: Kirkwood Cemetery

- 2:45 p.m.: Little York Cemetery

- 3 p.m.: Cedar Creek Cemetery

ONEIDA - Rylander-Milroy Post 727 of the American Legion will conduct services Monday.

The flag squad will meet at the Homestead Restaurant in Woodhull at 7 a.m. for breakfast. The services are:

- 9 a.m.: Rio Cemetery

- 9:30 a.m.: Brunner Cemetery

- 10:15 a.m.: Ontario Cemetery

- 11 a.m.: Oneida Cemetery

- 11:45 a.m.: Wataga Cemetery.

VICTORIA -American legion Post 726 will conduct services Sunday at the following locations.

- 9:30 a.m.: Salem Cemetery

- 10 a.m.: Center Prairies Cemetery

- 10:30 a.m.: Victoria Methodist Church

- 1 p.m.: Victoria Cemetery

- 1:30 p.m.: Scotch Cemetery

- 2 p.m.: Westerfall Cemetery

The Rev. Marty Briney of Victorian Methodist Church will conduct a brief service and Don Hammerstran will read roll call at each cemetery.
