17 students lead Galesburg Class of 2005

GALESBURG - Galesburg High School has named the following students as the Top 5 Percent in the Class of 2005.

Mary Allison is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar, has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame and has been awarded the Triple-G award. She is a member of National Honor Society; president of both the German Club and the German National Honor Society; recording secretary of student council; and a member of Art Club, Youth and Government, Worldwide Youth Science and Engineering and G-Club. She also was prom chair and participated in varsity softball. The daughter of John and Chris Allison of Galesburg, she plans to attend the University of Notre Dame.

Aamna Anwer is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar, has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame and has been awarded the Triple-G award. She is vice president of the National Honor Society; an officer of both Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society; a member of Youth and Government, Stage Call, Project Graduation and Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering; and was co-captain of the girl's tennis team. The daughter of Saba Anwer and Muhammed Saeed Anwer, both of Galesburg, she plans to attend Northwestern University as a pre-med student majoring in psychology and minoring in Spanish.

Garry Barton is an Illinois State Scholar, Principal's Scholar and Gale Scholar, and was named to the Academic Hall of Fame and high honor roll. He is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Spanish Club; and participated in varsity soccer and varsity track. The son of Garry and Tammy Barton of Galesburg, he plans to attend Carl Sandburg College and then transfer to Knox College, majoring in economics.

Aaron Brown is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar. He is a member of National Honor Society, German National Honor Society, German Club, student council, Youth and Government and Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and participates in varsity soccer, marching band and wind symphony. The son of Russ and Teresa Carlock of Galesburg and Brian and Chris Brown of Bloomington-Normal, he plans to attend Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and major in chemistry.

Sarah Christensen is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar, was named to the Western Big 6 Academic Team for fall and spring sports, and has been awarded the Triple-G award. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, G-Club, FFA and Fellowship of Christian Athletics. She was captain of the swim team and participated in varsity swimming and softball, marching band, pep band and wind symphony. The daughter of David and Becky Christensen of Galesburg, she plans to attend Monmouth College and pursue a career in health care.

Nicole Dehler is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar. She is a member of National Honor Society, French National Honor Society, French Club, CARE and prom committee; and participated in softball. The daughter of Thomas and Connie Dehler of Galesburg, she plans to attend Bradley University and study business.

Linnea K. Ek is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar. She is a member of National Honor Society, Latin Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and participated in marching band, pep band, wind symphony, winter drumline and The Weekend (formerly known as Chrysalis). The daughter of Thomas and Cheryl Ek of Galesburg, she plans to attend North Park University, Chicago.

Stella Fayman is an Illinois State Scholar, was named Exchange Club Student of the Month, and was awarded the Western Big 6 All-Conference Academic Award. She was nominated for Wendy's High School Heismann Award; is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, student council, Spanish Club, G-Club, Youth and Government, Stage Call, Scholastic Bowl team and Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering; and participated in varsity tennis and Performing Arts Academy. The daughter of Dr. Sam and Yana Fayman of Galesburg, she plans to attend Northwestern University and major in pre-medicine.

Abbie Hamilton is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar, and was awarded the Triple-G award. She is a member of National Honor Society, Science Club, student council, Teen Court, G-Club and Artte Clubbe; vice president of the Latin Club; and participated in varsity soccer. The daughter of Clay and Bernice Hamilton of Galesburg, she plans to attend Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa.

Ashley Hicks is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar and has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Science Club, CARE and Teen Court; vice president of student council; is an officer of Spanish Club; and participated in cheerleading (basketball) and Gadets (football). The daughter of Ronald and Susan Hicks of Galesburg, she plans to attend Butler University, Indianapolis, and work toward a dual-degree in engineering.

Christy Ivie is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar, has been named as National Merit Commended Student. She is a member of National Honor Society, French Honor Society, French Club for four years (officer one year), Science Club for two years (president one year), Artte Clubbe and Youth and Government; and participated in Gadets for four years (captain two years). The daughter of Rick and Kay Ivie of Galesburg, she plans to attend Illinois Wesleyan University and study occupational therapy and dance.

Patrick Kennedy is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar, has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame, and awarded the Irma Gale History award. He is a member of National Honor Society, Scholastic Bowl team, Youth and Government, student council, Worldwide Youth Science and Engineering and The Budget staff; an officer of Latin Club; and participated in varsity soccer. The son of James and Debra Kennedy of Galesburg, he plans to attend Notre Dame University and study either math or pre-medicine.

Lindsey Kerber is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar, has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame and awarded the Triple-G award. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, student council, Artte Clubbe, Science Club, G-Club, Spanish Club, Latin Club, AFS, Project Graduation and Teen Court; and participated in tennis and volleyball. The daughter of Robert and Constance Kerber of Galesburg, she plans to attend the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Timothy Minor is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar; and has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame, as Exchange Club Student of the Month and Elk's Club Teen of the Month and to Western Big 6 All-Conference Academic team. He is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, student council, Spanish Club, Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and Scholastic Bowl team; president of Youth and Government; co-vice president of senior class; co-vice president of G-Club; and is a peer mediator. The son of Dr. Arnold and Judi Minor of Galesburg, he plans to attend Marquette University and major in biological science with an emphasis on pre-dentistry.

Michelle Mosley is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar; has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame, Biology Student of the Month and Zoology Student of the Month; and awarded the Western Big 6 All-Conference Academic award and Triple-G award. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, student council, Spanish Club, Project Graduation committee, CARE, G-Club and Science Club. She participated in the girl's golf team for four years (three-year state qualifier and captain one year) and boy's basketball cheerleader (four years and captain one year) and named to the Universal Cheerleader's Association All-American All-Star Team in 2004. The daughter of Melvin and Shirley Mosley of Galesburg, she plans to attend the University of Illinois and study biology/pre-medicine.

Sara Shelley is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar; has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame and as Exchange Club Youth of the Month; and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is president of student council, president of Latin Club, secretary of National Honor Society, current member and former vice president of Science Club, member of Stage Call, Scholastic Bowl team, Youth and Government and Project Graduation. She is also a dance student and former volunteer student teacher at All That Dance, summer volunteer at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, juror on Teen Court and a Peer Tutor. The daughter of Tim and Laurie Shelley of Galesburg, she plans to attend Butler University, Indianapolis, and major in biology to pursue a career in genetics or medicine.

Nick Wolny is an Illinois State Scholar and Principal's Scholar; has been named to the Academic Hall of Fame, Who's Who Among American High School Students and as Exchange Club Youth of the Year; was a member of the 2005 Honor Band of America and IMEA Honor Band; and was Math Club Individual Champion and State Finalist. He is a member of National Honor Society, speech team, Math Club, Latin Club, Scholastic Bowl team, Stage Call, CARE, Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and The Budget staff; and participated in wind symphony and jazz band, and was vice president of band. The son of Kathy Wolny and Ken Wolny, both of Galesburg, he plans to attend the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and major in French horn performance.
