MONMOUTH - "Western Stoneware: The Molding of a Company," a Monmouth College student documentary about a celebrated local industry, will be previewed at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Barnes Electronic Classroom at the college's Hewes Library.

Produced by three students in professor Chris Goble's Advanced Video Production class, the film details the history of pottery in western Illinois, which culminated in the founding of Western Stoneware a century ago.

The merger of seven Midwest potteries, Western Stoneware produced a vast line of wares that were sold worldwide. The company's distinctive maple leaf imprint, which appeared on everything from butter churns to decorative stoneware, made Monmouth, "the Maple City," a household name.

Although increasing competition from foreign manufacturers finally forced the company to close in 2006, a group of former employees purchased its assets and are reviving the Western Stoneware brand as a specialty pottery.

The free preview is designed to elicit audience feedback, according to Goble, a lecturer in the department of communication and theater arts. Goble, who previously worked in television news, directed the documentary. The student filmmakers were Holly Butz, a junior from Des Plaines; Traci Ratliff, a junior from Sterling; and Louise Murphy, a freshman from Northern Ireland.
