Steeples attends care conference

GALESBURG - David Steeples, director of Pastoral Care at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, recently attended a Palliative Care Conference at Mount Carmel Medical Center. The conference was March 25-27.

Steeples also is in his last year of formation for the Permanate Diaconate. His ordination will be May 19. Steeples is a member of the Regional Supportive Care Committee and has also been involved in Ministry with Cursillo and Blessed Sacrament Parish. Steeples has served as director of Pastoral Care at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for six months.

Weyant supervisor in dietary at RCM

ROSEVILLE - Robert Weyant is the new dietary supervisor at Roseville Country Manor. He and his wife, Jamie, have lived in Roseville for the past four years. Weyant has worked in the dietary field for the past 13 years. He previously worked at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg,

Mary Hughes is the facility's new office manager. Hughes, husband Kevin, and 14-year-old daughter Andrea live in Manito and hope to move back to Canton, where their 21-year-old daughter Rachel lives with her husband and 2-year-old son, Clayton. Hughes had worked in Petersen Health Care's corporate office. She has worked in a nursing home setting for the past eight years.

Benejam presents academic posters

GALESBURG - Christopher Benejam, of Galesburg, a premed economics major at Augustana College, recently presented two academic scientific posters on healthcare access.

"Effects of Mental Illness, Age, Gender, Personal Healthcare Provider Relationship, and Medical Insurance Status on Healthcare Access in an Underserved Homeless Shelter Population in two Midwestern Rural Communities: A Multivariate Analysis" was presented at the annual convention of the American Medical Student Association in Washington, D.C. "Effects of Number of Physical Health Conditions, Number of Outpatient Office Visits, Mental Illness, and Medical Insurance Status on Emergency Department Visits in an Underserved Homeless Shelter Population in two Rural Illinois Communities: A Multivariate Analysis" was presented at the annual conference of the Illinois Rural Health Association in Effingham. His findings also have been accepted for presentation at this year's AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting in Orlando.

Benejam is president of the American Medical Student Association premed chapter at Augustana, and has served on volunteer medical projects in Illinois, Mexico, and Honduras.

Bodenhamer gets Quality Award

GALESBURG - The latest Norbert C. Smith Quality Award winner at NAEIR is Rickey Bodenhamer of St. Augustine. He was hired as a maintenance helper on April 27, 1986, but his current position is pick/packer in the shipping department. Bodenhamer receives a plaque, monetary award, and a front parking space for two months.

Patel completes education course

GALESBURG - Kishor Patel, M.D., F.C.C.P, has successfully completed continuing education for Interventional Pulmonology, Therapeutic Bronchoscopy, Medical Thoracoscopy and Percutaneous Tracheotomy in Burlington, Mass. Completing this course allows Dr. Patel to improve his bronchoscopy skills, introduce newer methods to diagnose and treat lung cancer bronchoscopically, and enter the new era of "Interventional Pulmonology."

Dr. Patel has been practicing at the Galesburg Clinic since October 1995.

OSF's Kyle attends orthopedics seminar

GALESBURG - Mary Kyle, physical therapist, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center recently attended a seminar titled "Intensive Orthopedics," April 20 and 21. The course provided information on joint replacements and extremity fractures and also therapeutic interventions. Information from this course will assist Kyle in treating patients while in the hospital and also upon discharge.

Therapist Albert McKenzie certified

GALESBURG - OSF St. Mary Medical Center announced Sarah Albert, physical therapist, recently became a certified practitioner of the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment. The McKenzie Method is a comprehensive evaluation and treatment approach to the spine.

Albert passed the certification exam July 22, 2006, which concluded a 15-day, post-graduate course of study in the McKenzie Method. The course consisted of multi-level testing with written and performance components. The McKenzie Method uniquely emphasizes education and active patient involvement in the management of their pain to minimize the number of visits to the physical therapy clinic and to establish life-long, self-management skills that will facilitate long-term recovery. Albert has been employed at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for four years and has 20 years' experience as a physical therapist.

OSF's Byabato attends conference

GALESBURG - The Rev. Deus-Dedit Byabato, chaplain, Pastoral Care, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, attended a conference for the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, March 16-20.

During the conference, Byabato became certified as a chaplain for all faiths. In January 2006, Byabato also completed a Threat and Risk Assessment Course offered by the Texas Engineering Extension Service on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security. During the course, he was trained to assist with preparation and response of a terrorist act or disaster.

Byabato also has completed training for Protecting God's Children for Adults through the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peoria. Byabato has been the chaplain at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for more than two years.

2 Country agents named All-American

GALESBURG - Country Insurance and Financial Services recently awarded two agents positions on the distinguished All-American team.

Agent Shelley Postin, Avon, and Agent Steve Butler, Astoria received the honor.

The agents are among a group of 372 top Country agents and agency managers who qualified for the award. Country has more than 2,000 agents and agency managers in 14 states.

All American is awarded each year by Country to agents and agency managers who have excelled in identifying insurance products and financial solutions that fit the needs of their clients. An agency manager or agent must meet an exceptional level of insurance production and the policies sold must remain in force for established periods of time.

This is the third time Postin has been named an All-American. Butler has received the award 17 times.

Higbee Agency has outstanding sales

GALESBURG - The Higbee Insurance Agency, 1636 200th Ave., recently was honored for outstanding sales and service by Svea Mutual Insurance Co., Orion. The agency achieved the honor by meeting certain criteria, including volume of business and profitability. This distinction puts the Higbee Insurance Agency among a group of only 18 agencies honored in 2006 by Svea Mutual Insurance Co., one of the largest farm mutuals in Illinois.
