Community Chorus adds Knox choir, orchestra Thursday, May 3, 2007 GALESBURG - The Galesburg Community Chorus will conclude its 62nd season in grand style with Beethoven's Mass in C at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Central Congregational Church. The Community Chorus is directed by Tim Pahel, chairman of the Music Department at Carl Sandburg College and a doctoral candidate in choral conducting at the University of Iowa. The chorus will be joined by the Knox College Choir, directed by Dr. Laura Lane, chair of the Music Department at Knox College and director of Nova Singers. Ludwig van Beethoven composed two Masses in his life, the Mass in C and the well-known Missa Solemnis. He composed the Mass in C in 1807 as a commission from Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy II. The work was not initially popular and was cast in the shadow of his famous 5th Symphony, which was composed a year later. The Mass was not published for several years. The choirs will be joined by four professional soloists from Illinois. Soprano Sarah Nicholas Price is a soloist from Bloomington and music instructor at both Knox College and Monmouth College. Elizabeth Anderson, mezzo-soprano, is a Chicago vocalist and chorus member for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Terry Chasteen, tenor, serves as an assistant professor of voice at Western Illinois University and will join the Community Chorus for the third time as a tenor soloist. Baritone Joshua Zink, a frequent performer for the University of Illinois Opera Theatre, completes the quartet of soloists. Accompanying the chorus will be a 33-member orchestra of local and regional players. "We are lucky to have talented players from Galesburg and the surrounding area who are willing to join the Chorus for this performance. Beethoven presents many challenges to interpret. We are incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful professional players in the area," said Pahel. The Community Chorus is the oldest continuous music performance organization in Galesburg. It is made up of volunteers who love great choral literature. Membership is open to all without audition. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and student admission is free courtesy of Wells Fargo Bank. For more information, or to reserve tickets, call 342-8143.
