MONMOUTH - An unidentified man was hit and killed by an eastbound freight train Friday afternoon at a railroad crossing on South Main Street.Rescue workers were dispatched at 2:47 p.m. to the BNSF Railway tracks adjacent to the Monmouth Public Safety Building, 600 S. Main St.
Monmouth police and fire officials were joined at the scene by the Warren County Sheriff's Department and Illinois State Police. Representatives from BNSF Railway also were at the scene.
At around 4:20 p.m., officials carried the body from the scene. Warren County Coroner Bill Underwood said the victim is a white male, but has not been identified. An autopsy is scheduled for today in Peoria and an inquest will be scheduled at a later date. The accident remains under investigation.
The intersection was blocked for more than two hours while officials worked the scene. Snow fell off and on during the investigation, at times hampering visibility.
The victim was the third area resident to be killed in an accident involving trains in recent months.
Marci A. McClendon, 34, of Galesburg was struck and killed by a BNSF train Dec. 30, 2006, while walking on the tracks in East Galesburg. On Jan. 9, a car driven by Nova G. Klingebiel, 76, rolled onto a BNSF Railway crossing on U.S. 150 near Rio and was struck by a train. Klingebiel was pronounced dead at the scene.
