James M. Leighton
Thursday, February 14, 2008GALESBURG - James M. Leighton, 72, 6 State Route 164, died at 3:48 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2008) at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born Jan. 14, 1936, in Luray, Kan., the son of James Harlan and Dorothy E. Lewis Leighton.
He married Marcella A. Brodie on Sept. 4, 1970, in Petersburg. She survives of Galesburg.
Also surviving are six sons, Ross Hanhart of Norfolk, Va., James E. Leighton of Quincy, Greg Deck-Leighton of Galesburg, John (Alisha) Davis Deck of Springfield, Paul (Kim) Thomas Deck Sr. of Streator and Michael (Jeanne) Brodie of Petersburg; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; a sister, Verla M. Robinson of Winsfield, Kan.; and six brothers, John H. Leighton of Chico, Calif., Robert Sloggett of Tulsa, Okla., Richard (Marsha) Sloggett of West Cliff, Colo., Raymond Leighton of Long Beach, Calif., Ed (Diane) Sloggett of Osburn, Kan., and Gary (Dixie) Sloggett of Hunter, Kan. Preceded in death by his parents, one son, James Donald Leighton, and one granddaughter.
He was raised and educated in Kansas.
He served in the Navy from 1954 until 1957, then in the Reserves until 1962.
He moved to Rushville in 1966 and to Galesburg in 1984.
He was a long-haul truck driver, then a bus driver for the former R. W. Harmon School Bus Company and finally was a mechanic and driver for the former Randall Bus Company in Galesburg, retiring in 2001.
He attended East Main Congregational United Church of Christ in Galesburg.
He loved to fish, travel and watch NASCAR.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory, Knoxville, with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 of Galesburg, with the Rev. Robin Faull officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the funeral home in Knoxville. Inurnment will be later in Petersburg.
