James E. Heflin
Wednesday, February 13, 2008WILLIAMSFIELD - James Edward Heflin, 79, 121 Locust St., died at 6 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2008) at his residence.
He was born Dec. 4, 1928, in Victoria, the son of Fred and Glaydes Holmes Heflin.
He married Delorse "Bea" Yelm Lewis on July 28, 1962, in Williamsfield. She survives of Williamsfield.
Also surviving are daughter, Trudy (Mitch) Self of Williamsfield; three sons, Rudy (Chris) Lewis of Peoria, Ed (Marilyn) Lewis of Williamsfield and Randy Lewis of DuQuoin; 13 grandchildren, Joel (Kim) Lewis, Michelle (Randy) Welker, Matt (Jessica) Lewis, Amy (Vince) Blackhurst, Michael Cole, Travis Lewis, Josh Lewis, Jaime (Adam) Lewis, Mike (Suzy) Lewis, Dallas (Annie) Self, Allison Lewis, Kevin Lewis and Patrick Lewis; seven great-grandchildren, Austin and Abbie Anderson; Nolan, Jaxson, Elliot and Piper Lewis and Henry Lewis; sister, Joan (Keith) Nelson of Galesburg; and four nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one grandson, Tony Lewis.
He was raised and educated in Victoria, graduating from the Victoria High School.
He served in the Army from Oct. 12, 1953 until Oct. 11, 1955 during the Korean conflict. He received the National Defense Service Medal.
He worked as a spot welder at OMC in Galesburg, retiring after 34 years, and was a bus driver for the Williamsfield School District for 20 years. He volunteered his time in the summers to drive the bus for children to attend swimming events. He helped Joe Murdock on his farm. He was a 58-year member first joining the Victoria Masonic Lodge and later transferring to the Pacific Masonic Lodge 66 AF and AM of Knoxville, Scottish Rite Valley of Peoria, and the Mohammed Temple Shrine of Peoria, and Williamsfield American Legion Post 371 of Williamsfield.
In his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, washing and waxing his vehicles, walking his dogs and looked forward to each Sunday dinner with his family.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory, Knoxville, with the Rev. Randy Douglass officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory, Knoxville, with Masonic Services by Pacific Masonic Lodge 66 AF and AM of Knoxville at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Williamsfield Cemetery, with military rites by Williamsfield American Legion Post 371.
