Gerald L. Carlson
Wednesday, February 13, 2008MONMOUTH - Gerald L. Carlson, 77, of rural Monmouth, died at 10:35 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2008) at home.
Gerald was born Dec. 6, 1930, in North Henderson, the son of Arthur C. and Mabel D. (Blick) Carlson. Gerald was raised and educated in Warren County, attending Liberty School and graduating from Kirkwood High School in 1948.
Gerald married Edna Phelps at the Phelps home in rural Monmouth on Aug. 22, 1953, and she survives.
Gerald farmed his entire life. He loved to till gardens and mowed many lawns as well as Lenox Union Cemetery. Gerald and Edna ran the north airport concession stand at the Warren County Prime Beef Festival for 18 years. He also ran the Fairview Center ball diamond concession stand. He loved being around kids. He also enjoyed visiting with the residents at Plonka Terrace in Galesburg.
He was a member of Fairview Center United Methodist Church, Monmouth, where he organized, served and was "head cook" for the church dinners for many years. Gerald served as Sunday school treasurer first at 9th Avenue Presbyterian Church and later Fairview Center United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Warren County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Carlson; two daughters, Judy Carlson of Monmouth and Nancy Carlson of Galesburg; two brothers, Dale (Carol) Carlson of Roseville and Lester (Connie) Carlson of Oneida; one sister, Glennis Eyler of Monmouth; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers-in-law, Richard Eyler, David Phelps and Willard Powers
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Fairview Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Brown officiating. Burial will be in Lenox-Union Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, Feb. 15, at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, where his family will be present 5 to 7 p.m.
