Msgr. James L. Morrissey 1921-2008 Wednesday, February 13, 2008 LACON - Msgr. James L. Morrissey, 86, of St. Joseph Nursing Home in Lacon, passed away there at 8:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.He was born April 25, 1921, in Grinnell, Iowa, to James Sr. and Mary Gallagher Morrissey. He is survived by one sister, Mildred Kelly of Peoria, one brother, J. Edward Morrissey of Naperville and one stepsister, Phyllis Spitz of Mendota. He was preceded in death by four brothers, the Rev. Jerome, the Rev. Larry, Terry and Bernard Morrissey. Msgr. Morrissey was ordained May 29, 1955. He served as assistant, St. Paul's, Macomb, 1955; Holy Family, Oglesby, 1957; Chaplain, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Danville; and faculty, Schlarman High School, Danville, 1966; Pastor, St. Anthony's, Matherville; and St. John's, Viola, 1967; St. Cecilia's, Peoria, 1970; Immaculate Heart of Mary, Galesburg, 1975; Vicar, Monmouth Vicariate, 1987-90; pastor, Immaculate Conception, Streator, 1990; and St. Joseph's, Cornell, 1992; Prelate of Honor, 1993; Senior priest status and pastor emeritus, 1998. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Most Rev. Daniel R. Jenky, Bishop of Peoria, will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the cathedral with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Further visitation will be one hour before the service at the cathedral.
