Humorous duo on to state sectionals

GALESBURG - Two members of an area high school speech team advanced to this weekend's state tournament in Oak Lawn after sectional competition Saturday in Rock Island.

Kevin Mercer and Sarah Smith from Spoon River Valley High School will compete at state in the humorous duet acting category. They finished third at the sectional; the top four finishers advance to the next tournament.

Kaushik Srinivasan from Galesburg High School (impromptu and extemporaneous speaking), Valley's John Neville (original comedy) and Caiti Tucker and Maddie Eagens from United all advanced to the sectional finals but did not place in the top four, and thus will not advance to state.
