Dr. James Richard Thompson
Monday, February 11, 2008Lewistown - Dr. James Richard Thompson, 86, of Lewistown, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 9, 2008) at Red Oak Estates in Canton.
He was born July 17, 1921, in LaHarpe, to James Ernest and Ruth (Anderson) Thompson.
He married Bessie Fanyo on Feb. 4, 1945 in Watseka. She preceded him in death on May 31, 2004.
Surviving are four children, Rick Thompson of Denver, Colo., Maryjane Schwab of Ft. Collins, Colo., J.F. Thompson of Peoria, and Ellen (Tom) Bland of Hanna City; two sisters, Rosalee Barns of Des Moines, Iowa, and Marylou Lampe of Selbyville, Del.; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
He was a dentist practicing in Lewistown for 48 years. He was a member of the Peoria District Dental Society and the American Dental Association. He attended Knox College in Galesburg and was a graduate of Northwestern University Dental College in Chicago in 1944. He served during World War II as a 1st Lt. in the Army Dental Corps in Dental Clinics in the U.S. and Saipan, and Tinian in the Pacific.
He served four terms on the Lewistown Grade School Board and was a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Lewistown. He served many years on the Lewistown Savings and Loan Board. "Doc" was an avid golfer with 2 holes in one, and lifelong member of Wee Ma Tuk and Canton Country Clubs.
He was a member of Lewistown United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Lewistown United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Lewistown United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Bunnage will officiate. Burial with military honors will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.
