MAQUON - Harriet Lorraine Mitchell, 85, of rural Maquon died at 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg following a short illness.
She was the daughter of Edna Reynolds and Harry Harper. Harriet was born Oct. 2, 1922, in the same location in which she's resided since 1955. She married Arlyn Mitchell in June 1944. With her husband, Arlyn, who died Saturday, Harriet farmed first near Gilson and then for 40 years near Maquon on the farm homesteaded in 1836 by her great great-grandfather.
Harriet was very active in United Methodist Church of Maquon and served as Communion chair for 40 years. Harriet is survived by a son, Jerry (Susan) Mitchell of Austin, Texas, and their two children, Kathleen and Christopher; and a daughter, Kristy (Dave) Rouland of Knoxville and Kristy's three children, Debbie, Keri and Grant as well as by a great granddaughter, Stephenie, and a great grandson, Cole. Harriet was preceded in death by her brother, Robert, and sister, Elsie.
Visitation will be held today from 2 until 4 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Maquon, with the funeral on Monday at 10 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Dan Doty officiating. Burial will be at Maquon Cemetery followed by a lunch at the church. In Lieu of flowers, Harriet requested that donations be made to Maquon United Methodist Church or Galesburg Rescue Mission.
