William E. 'Bill' Fowler Jr.

GALESBURG - William E. "Bill" Fowler Jr., 86, Galesburg, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at Carrington Place Nursing Home in Muscatine, Iowa. Bill was born Sept. 14, 1921, in Rock Island, the son of William E. and Harriet Jacobson Fowler.
Bill was a graduate of Monmouth High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was a captain in the 352 Fighter Group, 487 Squadron. He flew P-51 Mustang airplanes on missions during WWII and was stationed in Bodney, England. He flew on D-Day over Normandy and numerous other missions.
Bill married Marilyn Jeanne Gibb on Nov. 25, 1946, in Nashua, Iowa.
Bill worked for over 20 years with Service Pipe Line as a Diesel Mechanic. He was the owner of Fowler's Phillips 66 in Yates City for a number of years. Bill was a ham radio operator and a member of the Monmouth Flying Club. Bill was a member of VFW Post 2257 in Galesburg and was a volunteer VFW driver from Galesburg to Iowa City, Iowa Veterans Hospital. He attended the Yates City Presbyterian Church. Bill is a life member of the Yates City Masonic Lodge 448 AF and AM.
Surviving are one daughter, Denise and Jerry Easley of Carver, Minn.; and one son William D. and Deann Fowler of Muscatine, Iowa; six grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis and Leroy Minneman of LaHarpe and Shirley Walker of Rock Island. Six Grandchildren and Three Great Grandchildren also survive.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment with military honors will be in the Monmouth Cemetery. His family plans to receive friends at Turnbull's on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
