AVON - Chester G. Underwood, 87, Avon, died at 4:51 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 12, 2008) in his residence.
He was born Dec. 21, 1920, in Berwick, the son of Frank and Clara Lewis Underwood. He married Betty Day on June 9, 1946, at Abingdon Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Underwood, Avon; two sons Robert (and Nancy) Underwood, Bottineau, N.D., and Keith and (Diana) Underwood, St. Augustine; two daughters Jeanne (and David) Serven, St. Augustine, and Nancy (and Mike) Lafary, Walnut Grove; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Downin of Galesburg; and one brother, Francis (and June) Underwood, Beavercreek, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
He was born in Berwick and raised in the Berwick, Greenbush and Avon areas. He graduated Avon High School in 1939. He served in the Army during WWII for three years in the Pacific Theater.
He farmed in Berwick and Avon areas for many years; retiring in 1985 and building their home at Little Swan Lake. He was a member of the Abingdon American Legion Post 381, Past commander of Avon American Legion. He was the last charter member and 51-year member of the Avon Lions Club. He remained active and received the Melvin Jones Award.
He was a member of Avon Federated Church where he served on the board and was past president. He served several years on the Littler Swan Lake Board. He was a trustee of Greenbush Township Board. He enjoyed traveling, helping on the farm, and doing carpentry work. He also enjoyed community service work.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Avon Federated Church. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Abingdon American Legion Post 381.
Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Corman Memorial Home, Avon. Memorials may be made to the Avon Lions Club and/or the Avon Federated Church. Corman Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
