Sylvia L. Gillaspie

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Sylvia L. Gillaspie, 90, Burlington, died at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 3, 2006) in Burlington Care Center.

She was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Oquawka, Ill., the daughter of Cecil and Verle L. Sebering Huss.

She married Clair F. Gillaspie on Sept. 22, 1933, in Burlington. He died April 26, 1966.

Surviving are two sons, Clair "Bill" Gillaspie, Burlington, and Paul E. Gillaspie, Galesburg; three daughters, Carol (and Leonard) Johnson and Janet (Doug) Abney, both of Burlington, and Donna Olson, Galesburg; a brother, Charles Huss, Oquawka; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, and a son-in-law, Pete Olson.

She worked at Witte's Drugstore and at the Henderson County Senior Citizens in Gladstone.

She had been village clerk in Gulfport for many years and wrote articles for The Quill and Henderson County News.

She was a member of Heritage Trails of Henderson County and Senior Citizens Community Center in Gladstone.

She enjoyed playing the piano.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Carman Cemetery, with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Friends may call after noon Thursday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home; family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
